Artist-in-Residence 2025: Lili Huston-Herterich
We’re incredibly excited to announce that A Tale of A Tub’s inaugural resident will be Lili Huston-Herterich. Together with Amy Jones, who acted as an external voice throughout the selection process, we wanted to note that Lili’s application stood out to us through the many ways in which it takes the institution itself as a site of negotiation, in turn engaging the very context of the pilot residency as material for a larger project. With this in mind, we were particularly excited by how central a mutual exchange between A Tale of A Tub and Huston-Herterich is to the project, and her invitation to us to (self-)reflect on our practices of inscription is as much a welcome provocation as it is a necessity for the field at large.
As Huston-Herterich wrote in her application, ‘I started thinking about “radical dependency” while working in art institutional contexts, which often mirror Western modes of authorship and citation. I have been looking for modes of acknowledgement and citation in this field that can hold the many labours, contexts and situated specificities that artistic practices depend on… I recognise (and assume) that A Tale of A Tub is open to changing institutional practices in response to activities that happen there. I hear that elements of Brianna Leatherbury’s work will be used to heat the space; I see a drink from a talk by Taylor Lemelle available in the gallery cafe; I assume limited edition merch is a solution for excessive production; I assume actions from an access toolkit Iaraith Ní Fheorais presented in a talk are being used in the gallery. I see these choices and wonder how these lineages of influence can be traced.’
Huston-Herterich will be on residence from September to November this year. Throughout her time at A Tale of A Tub, there will be a number of public moments to meet. More details on the when and the how to follow in the coming months!
LILI HUSTON-HERTERICH is a Rotterdam-based artist. She has a situated practice both materially and conceptually; she works with what she is in close vicinity to in order to maintain an awareness of her current position historically, geographically, and economically. Her research prioritises personal and political lineages of information, and uses improvisational and dialogue-based methods of knowledge transmission. She works alone and with other people, with tactile materials and with performance, sound, and video.
