A Tale of A Tub

3:00 – 6:00 PM

Open Wave-Receiver Workshop with SHORTWAVE COLLECTIVE and RADIO WORM

While The Lips of History—our recent exhibition on the histories and untold tales of telecommunications—has finished transmitting, we, along with our friends at Radio WORM, have been very eager to invite Shortwave Collective to the Netherlands to continue the feminist investigations into these networks of distribution. And this time, the airwaves are yours to surf. Join Shortwave Collective, Radio Worm and us to learn how to build your own simple radio receiver in this two-afternoon workshop. On Day 1, we will work with a basic set of materials—wire, clips, tent pegs and chosen or found objects—to build the DIY radio receivers. Then, on Day 2 we’ll take them out into the wild, becoming co-researchers and experimenters by attaching our radios to metal structures, turning them into makeshift antennas and searching for signals and transmissions from near and far.

We want to insist that no experience is necessary for participating. Shortwave Collective’s workshops have a feminist ethos and are designed as inclusive spaces to question and create together. They encourage you to bring/scavenge some scraps to customise your radio:
– Something flat and non-conductive, around A5 size
– A tube (also non-conductive), the size and shape of a toilet paper tube
– Small pieces of metal or mineral

Please note: Day 1 takes place at WORM Ubik (Boomgaardsstraat 69, 3012 XA Rotterdam) and Day 2 takes place at A Tale of A Tub. Tickets are required for this event, so secure your spot by clicking here.

This workshop is a collaboration between Radio WORM and A Tale of A Tub, in the spirit of the recently closed exhibition The Lips of History.

Biographies

SHORTWAVE COLLECTIVE is an international, feminist artist group, interested in creative uses of radio. They meet regularly to discuss feminist approaches to amateur radio and the radio spectrum as artistic material, sharing resources, considering DIY approaches and inclusive structures. The collective’s approach aims to create a collaborative, tech-based learning environment, one which acknowledges and attends to gendered education gaps and one that purposefully removes potential hurdles, such as unexplained components lists that assume knowledge.
